By Darwin Hanna / 27 Nov 2023 / 40:09

Birthdays are special occasions that serve as a reminder to celebrate life and create unforgettable memories. In 2010, as a gift to myself, I decided to embark on an extraordinary adventure to the vibrant city of Dubai. This mesmerizing metropolis is known for its grandeur, luxury, and a perfect blend of modernity and tradition. Its towering skyscrapers, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage beckoned me to explore its wonders.

Come along with me on this escapade as I surprise my dear friend with a spontaneous trip to Dubai. In this episode we will uncover the unpredictable course of our spirited adventure, teeming with eagerness and anticipation. Accompany me as I guide you through a virtual expedition of our time in Dubai, where each nook and cranny of this extraordinary city left an enduring mark on us. From immersing ourselves in contemporary architecture to unearthing the roots of traditional culture and indulging in the opulent lifestyle, Dubai is a treasure trove of encounters waiting to be unveiled. So, buckle up and prepare yourself for a spellbinding voyage through the dynamic city of Dubai, where fantasies become reality and cherished memories are forever etched in our hearts.

The airline I worked for had just inaugurated non-stop service to Dubai a year earlier, so this helped make this an easy choice of where to go. With excitement coursing through my veins, I embarked on this journey, accompanied by a dear friend who shared my enthusiasm for discovering new horizons. Little did I know that this birthday present to myself would turn out to be an experience of a lifetime. And let me tell you, it was a journey like no other. Picture a playful game of hide-and-seek, where my dear friend had no idea where we were going until we arrived at the gate of the airport.

This was our first big, or long distant trip together. It was a fifteen-hour flight, and I purposely did not attempt to travel on the first available day because I knew I, I mean we, would neither get first nor business class – so I listed us for the next day where the chances were much better. As we arrived at the airport on the day of departure, I checked us both in at one of the check-in kiosks preserving the anonymity of our destination until the very last moment. As we sat in the boarding area, I watched the area swell with passengers. I, of course, was trying to determine who and how many of these passengers were first and business class passengers. How many were standby passengers with more seniority than me. While from the outside I was, "as cool as the other side of the pillow. On the inside was a totally different story.

Finally, the moment arrived – boarding time. Once general boarding ended, the gate agent began calling standbys. They didn’t call many names before they called mine. I went up to the gate agent to receive our boarding passes. The gate agent handed me the tickets and said with a smile on her face, “enjoy your flight.” When she said that I reached out with joy and excitement for the tickets, however once I saw that our seats were in row thirty-whatever the hell it was, I thought there had to be some kind of mistake. How could she say, “enjoy your flight” knowing she was giving me seats in economy. A direct punch in the nose would have been less painful than seeing seats in row thirty-whatever. I would not have won any academy awards that evening because disdain was written all over my face.

For an instant the thought of not boarding and trying again the next day did enter my head. Nevertheless, I begrudgingly boarded and found my way AALLL the way back to row thirty whatever and did my very best to settle into my seat. Ok, scene setting right now. My dear friend is about 5’ 6” and 115 soaking wet. So, as I was trying to stuff myself into my seat, I noticed my friend maximizing her comfort in her seat as if nothing was wrong. Meanwhile, I sat with my arms folded like a six-year-old child, with a pouting face on display. You would have thought someone slapped me in the face. In fact, putting me in economy felt like a slap in the face. Even after the cabin door closed I was still hoping one of the flight attendants would come up to me and say, “ah, Mr. Hanna, there is a seat in first/business class available do you want to take it? And I would have been like, “so what the hell took ya’ll so long?”

As the ground crew began pushing the plane away from the gate, and the flight crew began showing the safety video, a profound sense of disappointment engulfed me completely. The realization that seat 31J was my seat for the next 15 hours had set in and you could see the disappointment written all over my face. What made things worse was the fact that my friend was not equally as disappointed as I was. You see, she had acres of space in her seat while seated, while I occupied every crevice of mine and some. As the flight was taxiing into position for take-off, she looked at me and asked what’s wrong. I said, “we are not up there, as I was pointing towards first and business class.” Then she uttered the words, “I don’t think there is any difference between first/business class and these seats.” I looked up to the heavens and modified Luke 23:34-38 and said, “forgive her; for she does not know what she says.” The one good thing was were seated in the three-seat configuration and she had the window seat, I had aisle seat, and the middle seat was empty. I surprised myself by releasing my disdain for the situation after only ten hours. Looking through some magazines articles and watching some travel videos about things to do in Dubai helped me focus on the true adventure that lay ahead.

The flight itself was unremarkable, which was a good thing, so I will not go into any further detail about it. After 14 hours and 57 minutes, the approach and landing at Dubai International Airport marked a seamless convergence of cutting-edge technology and architectural marvel against the backdrop of this vibrant desert city. The Iconic skyline of Dubai, dominated by futuristic skyscrapers and the iconic Burj Khalifa, served as a surreal panorama during the descent, offering us a glimpse of the city’s audacious blend of tradition and modernity. I do not really remember the customs experience, so I assume we made it through without incident. We took the Metro from the airport to Deira City Centre where the hotel we stayed was a two-block walk.

The visit to Dubai was my first foray into the Middle East and we were intrigued by the city’s grandeur. Dubai's vibrant energy and endless possibilities promised a journey filled with awe-inspiring adventures and unforgettable moments. We found a casual dining spot near the hotel and got something to eat but we turned in early because we wanted to get an early start the next day.

The next morning we embarked on a journey to explore the wonders of this magnificent city. We planned on taking advantage of the hop-on, hop-off Big Bus because we figured it was the perfect way to discover Dubai's iconic landmarks and hidden gems. On the first day, we hopped on the Big Bus at the bustling Mall of the Emirates, brimming with excitement. As the bus cruised through the city, we marveled at the stunning modern architecture that Dubai is renowned for. The first stop was the magnificent Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. We disembarked and gazed up in awe at the towering structure, capturing countless photos to commemorate the moment. We decided that we would visit as many sites as possible on days one and two, then revisit any sites of particular interest in more depth after that.

Next, we hopped back on the bus and made our way to the vibrant neighborhood of Jumeirah. We explored the famous Jumeirah Mosque, a stunning example of Islamic architecture. The bus then took us along the picturesque coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf. We decided to hop off at Kite Beach, where we walked along the promenade basked in the sun and taking in the sites. As the sun began to set, we hopped back on the bus and headed towards the historic district of Al Fahidi. We wandered through the narrow alleyways of the Al Bastakiya Quarter, admiring the traditional wind-tower houses and vibrant art galleries. The bus then took us to the Dubai Museum, where we immersed ourselves in the city's rich history and culture.

On the second day, we continued our adventure by hopping on the Big Bus at the Dubai Marina. We marveled at the stunning skyline as we made our way to the Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island shaped like a palm tree. We disembarked at the Atlantis, The Palm, a luxurious hotel with its very own waterpark. We hopped back on the bus and headed towards the Dubai Mall. This massive shopping destination offered a plethora of retail therapy options, but we were particularly excited about visiting the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. We were mesmerized by the diverse marine life on display, including sharks, rays, and colorful coral reefs. As the day drew to a close, we couldn't resist one final hop-off at the Dubai Fountain. We watched in awe as the water danced to the rhythm of the music, creating a spectacular show of lights and colors. It was the perfect ending to our two-day adventure on the hop-on, hop-off Big Bus in Dubai.

Experiencing the Modern Architecture

Dubai is renowned for its awe-inspiring modern architecture, and no visit to the city would be complete without experiencing its magnificent structures up close. As my friend and I strolled through the streets, we found ourselves in awe of the iconic Burj Al Arab, a sail-shaped hotel that stands as a symbol of luxury and grandeur. We marveled at its sleek design and indulged in a decadent afternoon tea at one of its opulent restaurants. But Dubai's architectural wonders extend far beyond the Burj Al Arab. The skyline is adorned with towering skyscrapers, each one more impressive than the last. We took a trip to the Dubai Marina, where we witnessed the stunning juxtaposition of modern high-rises against the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf. The architectural marvel of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, left us breathless as we stood at its foot and craned our necks to admire its dizzying height.

Unforgettable Adventures on Dubai Creek

On one of the days we decided to experience a sailing excursion on Dubai Creek. We made our way to Dubai Creek, where we were greeted by the sight of charming wooden abras, their polished decks gleaming in the morning light. We stepped aboard one of these traditional boats, ready to set sail on our unique birthday adventure. The captain, a friendly and knowledgeable local, welcomed us aboard and shared stories of Dubai's rich maritime history. With the gentle breeze caressing our faces, we set off on our journey, gliding along the calm waters of the creek. The vibrant red sails of the wooden abras added a touch of nostalgia to the scene, transporting us back in time.

As we sailed along the creek, we were captivated by the picturesque views that unfolded before our eyes. On one side, we saw the bustling souks, where merchants displayed their wares, and the air was filled with the aroma of exotic spices. On the other side, we marveled at the modern skyline, a testament to Dubai's rapid development. The wooden abras gracefully passed beneath the iconic Al Maktoum Bridge, symbolizing the connection between the past and the present. The captain shared stories of the bridge's construction, and we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we looked up at its towering structure. As our journey continued, we encountered traditional dhows, their sails billowing in the wind. These graceful vessels, once the lifeblood of Dubai's trade, added a touch of authenticity to the experience. We imagined the adventures of the sailors who navigated these waters, their journeys taking them to far-flung destinations.

The captain skillfully maneuvered the wooden abras through the creek's winding channels, revealing hidden corners and secret treasures. We made a brief stop at the historic Al Fahidi neighborhood, where we disembarked to explore the narrow alleyways lined with traditional wind-tower houses. The intricate architectural details and vibrant art galleries transported us to a different era. As the sun reached its zenith, we returned to the wooden abras, ready to continue our journey. The captain regaled us with tales of pearl diving, an ancient trade that once thrived in these waters. We imagined the bravery of the divers as they plunged into the depths, searching for the precious pearls that adorned the jewelry of royalty.

As the day wore on, the golden rays of the setting sunbathed the creek in a warm glow. The wooden abras gently carried us back to the starting point, marking the end of our unforgettable sailing adventure. We disembarked with hearts filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Dubai Creek on such a special occasion. As my friend and I bid farewell to the wooden abras, we knew that this birthday trip would forever hold a cherished place in our memories. The sailing experience on Dubai Creek had not only allowed us to immerse ourselves in the city's rich heritage but also strengthened the bond of friendship between us. And as we walked away, hand in hand, we carried with us the magic of that day, forever grateful for the gift of shared experiences and the joy of exploration.

Desert Safari and Dune Bashing

Our next adventure was the desert safari. Embarking on a thrilling desert safari adventure in Dubai promises an exhilarating experience amidst the golden dunes. The vast landscape of sun-kissed sand stretches endlessly, captivating the senses. I had forgotten that my friend mentioned years earlier that she experiences motion sickness, nevertheless she did not object to this unique adventure. However, the undulating waves of the desert terrain proved to be too formidable an adversary for her. As our 4x4 vehicle ventured deep into the heart of the dunes, the air crackled with excitement. The skillful driver maneuvered through sandy ridges, creating a rollercoaster-like sensation that elicited cheers of exhilaration from our group. The desert, bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun, felt like an otherworldly playground, and we were eager participants in this thrilling spectacle.

Yet, as the dune bashing continued, my friend's demeanor subtly shifted. The enthusiasm waned, replaced by a pale complexion that hinted at discomfort. The rhythmic rise and fall of the dunes, combined with sharp turns and sudden drops, began to take a toll. Despite the windows being down to let the cool desert breeze sweep through the vehicle, my friend's complexion was not looking good. Caught between the desire to fully embrace the adventure and the realization that my friend was succumbing to carsickness, we faced a dilemma. Sensing the predicament, the driver adjusted the pace, striving to strike a balance between the thrill-seekers' delight and the need for a smoother ride. However, the relentless nature of the dunes had already left its mark.

Our desert safari experience consisted of four 4X4 SUVs, and while on this desert tour one of our fellow adventurers (in another vehicle) was unable to handle the undulating sensation. As our convoy came to a stop, we observed a 4x4 vehicle pulling over. A young woman, who was feeling overwhelmed by motion sickness, leaned to the side. The expansive desert landscape served as a witness to the unexpected interruption in our thrilling journey, prompting feelings of empathy and an acknowledgment of the difficulties presented by the captivating yet demanding dune terrain.

Transitioning from high-energy dune bashing to a serene sunset setting, my friend valiantly tried to regain composure. The desert, now bathed in a warm, amber glow, offered a tranquil respite. We disembarked from the vehicle, hoping the change in scenery would bring relief. The vast expanse of the desert, stretching infinitely in every direction, should have provided a source of tranquility. However, my friend continued to struggle with the aftermath of the tumultuous ride. The campsite, nestled amidst the dunes, beckoned with promises of Arabian hospitality and cultural immersion. Yet, my friend, still battling waves of nausea, sought solace in the quieter corners of the camp.

Following the thrilling desert safari, our group eagerly embraced a more peaceful and culturally immersive experience as the sun retreated below the horizon. Our destination was a charming desert camp, illuminated by the soft glow of traditional lanterns, nestled among the undulating dunes of Dubai. The night sky, adorned with countless stars, provided a celestial backdrop for the festivities that awaited us. The evening commenced with a traditional dinner, showcasing an assortment of mouthwatering Middle Eastern delicacies. The air was filled with the enticing scents of grilled meats, aromatic spices, and freshly baked bread, creating an irresistible ambiance. I savored my meal under the starlit sky, with the cool desert breeze carrying the echoes of laughter and conversation, while I delighted in the rich flavors of Arabian cuisine.

I could not fully enjoy my meal because I knew that my friend was still suffering from the upset stomach from the desert adventure. My friend's motion sickness showed no signs of abating, causing her discomfort and unease. Determined to help alleviate her symptoms, I embarked on a mission to find something that would settle her stomach and bring her relief. I began a search for a remedy. Ginger Ale, known for its soothing properties, immediately came to mind. I approached one of the servers, hoping they would have a can or two tucked away. However, to my disappointment, they had no idea what I was talking about.

Undeterred, I continued my quest, determined to make them understand what I was talking about so I touched my stomach and made a facial gesture indicating sickness. The person reacted indicating that they understood me and they rushed off. The person came back with sliced lemons on a paper plate. I was thinking to myself, how do you get sliced lemons from a Ginger Ale request. I brought the lemons back to my friend and told her what had happened. We both were a tad discouraged as I was going through in my mind how can I get them to understand me. After about 30-seconds, she put one of the lemons slices in her mouth. She said within seconds the nausea noticeably began to subside. She then began shoving those lemon slices in her mouth one after the other and within a minute the nausea was completely gone. While not the conventional choice for motion sickness, lemons are known for their refreshing and calming qualities.

In this unexpected twist, sliced lemons became an unlikely hero, offering total relief to my friend's motion sickness. The power of simple remedies and the willingness to explore unconventional solutions proved that sometimes, the most effective remedies can be found in the simplest of sources. As I reflect on this experience, I am reminded of the importance of empathy and resourcefulness. In moments of discomfort, a willingness to go the extra mile and think outside the box can make all the difference.

As our last bites were relished, the desert burst to life with the rhythmic beats of traditional music. Graceful belly dancers twirled and swayed, their movements perfectly synchronized with the mesmerizing melodies. The percussive sounds of traditional instruments added an enchanting rhythm to the night, transporting us to a world where the ancient traditions of the desert were celebrated.

Beneath the expansive desert sky, we were captivated by the stories told through dance, the vibrant costumes, and the spirited music that resonated through the dunes. The performers, with their masterful artistry, breathed life into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. The atmosphere was nothing short of enchanting, as the combination of traditional entertainment and the open-air setting created a magical ambiance reminiscent of scenes from Arabian Nights. As the night progressed, the desert transformed into a canvas of cultural expression, and we reveled in the fusion of traditional entertainment and the natural splendor of the Arabian landscape. It was a captivating finale to our desert safari adventure, where the exhilaration of the dunes gave way to an evening of cultural immersion, shared narratives, and the enchantment of the desert illuminated by the twinkling stars above.

As we left the desert behind and returned to the city lights of Dubai, and my friend fully recovered from her unexpected bout of carsickness, the desert safari etched itself into our memories as a testament to the unpredictable nature of adventure. It became a tale of resilience and camaraderie, reminding us that even in the face of unexpected challenges, the allure of the desert and the bonds forged amidst its sands would endure.

Visiting the Burj Khalifa

No trip to Dubai would be complete without a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Standing at a staggering height of 2716 feet or 828 meters, this architectural marvel offers visitors a chance to witness the city from dizzying heights. To put that in perspective One World Trade (formerly known as Freedom Tower and the tallest building in the US) is 1776 feet or 541 meters tall. Embarking on an adventure to the Burj Khalifa, the towering symbol of architectural magnificence, my friend and I were filled with anticipation and awe. As we approached the entrance, however, we were met with the reality of a seemingly endless queue that stretched before us. The general entry line to reach the observation deck, where we could marvel at the breathtaking views from the highest point in the world, was estimated to take a staggering two hours. Undeterred by the prospect of a lengthy wait, we weighed our options. The allure of reaching the top, witnessing the cityscape unfold beneath us, was undeniable. But the thought of spending precious hours standing in line began to chip away at our enthusiasm. That's when we learned about the express lane, a faster route that would grant us immediate access to the observation deck, bypassing the lengthy queues.

However, as we delved deeper into the details, we discovered that the express lane came at a cost of $150 per person at the time, and that was more than what we felt comfortable paying. While the allure of skipping the line and ascending to the top of the Burj Khalifa was tempting, we had to weigh the value of the experience against the price tag. After careful consideration, we made the difficult decision not to ascend to the top of the Burj Khalifa. While the desire to witness the panoramic views from the highest point in the world remained strong, the cost of the express lane felt prohibitive. We knew that the memories we would create during our trip could be just as meaningful, even without reaching the pinnacle of the iconic building.

Instead, we opted to explore the surrounding area, taking in the architectural wonders and vibrant atmosphere that Dubai had to offer. We wandered through the Dubai Mall, marveled at the stunning fountains, and immersed ourselves in the vibrant energy of the city. While we couldn't reach the top of the Burj Khalifa, we found solace in the countless other experiences that awaited us. As we reflect on our decision, we recognize that travel is often about making choices that align with our priorities and budget. While the allure of the Burj Khalifa's observation deck was undeniable, we made a conscious decision to allocate our resources in a way that allowed us to explore other facets of Dubai's rich culture and history.

Though we may not have reached the top of the world's tallest building, our journey was filled with countless memories and experiences that will forever hold a special place in our hearts. And perhaps, one day, we will return to the Burj Khalifa, ready to ascend to the highest point and embrace the breathtaking views that await us.

We next visited the Dubai Mall, a bustling retail paradise nestled in the heart of the vibrant city, offers an array of attractions that go beyond traditional shopping. Among its many marvels, the aquarium dive tank stands out as a mesmerizing and immersive experience that brings visitors face-to-face with the wonders of the underwater world. As my friend and I entered the Dubai Mall, we were immediately captivated by the grandeur and opulence that surrounded us. The sheer size of the mall was awe-inspiring, with its vast corridors and luxurious boutiques. However, it was the promise of the aquarium dive tank that truly piqued our curiosity. Making our way through the bustling crowds, we followed the signs that led us to the entrance of the aquarium. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a breathtaking sight—a massive cylindrical tank filled with an abundance of marine life. The tank stretched from the ground floor all the way up to the third level, creating a stunning centerpiece that commanded attention.

It was the perfect way to celebrate another year of life and indulge in the luxuries this vibrant city has to offer. Dubai, with its mesmerizing skyline and modern architecture, left me in awe.
