Episode 25: Wine Travel and Portuguese The Casanel Affair

In November 2010, I undertook a covert reconnaissance mission to gather critical information about the Casanel Vineyard and Winery. This podcast episode will explore the purpose, planning, execution, and outcomes of this mission, shedding light on the significance of the operation.

Purpose and Planning:

The primary objective of the reconnaissance mission was to gather intelligence on the Casanel Vineyard and Winery, a renowned establishment known for producing high-quality wines. The mission aimed to assess the vineyard's infrastructure, grape cultivation practices, and the authenticity of the owner’s claim. This information would prove invaluable for strategic planning and decision-making because I was considering planning a group visit to the vineyard.

The planning phase involved meticulous research and analysis of the target location. Ariel imagery, public records, and local sources were utilized to gather information on the vineyard's layout, buildings, its access points, and its rendering in my unique beauty quotient. I also studied the winery's history, ownership, and industry reputation to better understand if this site would suffice.

To fully understand the appeal and the choice of Casanel Vineyard and Winery, you must know two things. First, at this time I was the facilitator of a Meet-up Group that had the express goal of speaking and improving one’s Portuguese speaking and understanding level. The Portuguese Language Learning Meet-Up Group in Leesburg, VA, was a small yet vibrant community of language enthusiasts who gather twice per month to enhance our Portuguese language skills.

This diverse and welcoming group provided a supportive environment for learners of all proficiency levels, from beginners to advanced speakers. Through engaging conversations, interactive activities, and cultural immersion, participants had the opportunity to practice their Portuguese, expand their vocabulary, and develop their fluency. The meet-up group fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual learning, making it an ideal platform for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the rich and vibrant Portuguese language and culture.

You might be asking, “what the hell does the Portuguese language have to do with the Casanel Vineyard and Winery?” In doing my research I discovered that the owner (Nelson DeSouza) was Brazilian and fluent in Portugues. This seemed to be a perfect confluence of three of my interests…wine, travel, and Portuguese.

Back in the late aught years of the early 2000s I was really engaged with Meet-up.com and attended a few Meet-up events. In doing so I came across someone who worked with three Brazilians ladies. When I mentioned that I was putting together a visit to a local winery whose owner was Brazilian, they were very interested in visiting Casanel, and this helped to confirm the location of the event. Combine the three Brazilians with three others from that group made six.

So, after the recon-mission, the planning began. First, I had to gauge the participation level so I could find a transportation company with the appropriately sized vehicle at an acceptable price. After several visits to transportation companies, I found a company with good reviews, good reputation, and good terms.

Next, I had to find a date that would be amenable to the largest number of interested people. So once a date was chosen, I announced the event on my Meet-up page and linked it to any and all other groups that I was a member of. Beyond that, marketing was done via word-of-mouth, a.k.a guerilla marketing.

While on my recon-mission I had talked with Nelson and told him about the combined group that I would be bringing to his winery. The group number had grown to fifteen persons of which five were fluent in Portuguese, three were conversational in Portuguese, and all were fluent in wine. As such I negotiated a 15% discount for our group for any purchase which included tastings, any wine, and merch. I bought some tickets and wrote 15%/Portuguese Meetup on them and gave them out to each group member. I reached out the weekend before our arrival date just to remind the staff that we were coming and then again the day before.

I set up the 24-seat executive bus to pick up in Alexandria and in Leesburg before heading to the Winery. For those who are not familiar with “the DMV,” that is the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, Alexandria, VA is just a couple of miles due south of Washington, DC and Leesburg, VA is about forty-five miles northwest of Washington. So, I drove my vehicle from Leesburg to Alexandria so I could be at the first pick up point and make sure all went well. Then I rode on the bus from Alexandria back to Leesburg to do the same there. Both pickups went without incident, and we arrived at the Casanel Vineyard and Winery around two p.m.

Casanel Vineyard and Winery, located in the scenic town of Leesburg, Virginia, boasts a landscape that is nothing short of breathtaking. Situated in the heart of Loudoun County's wine country, the winery is surrounded by rolling hills, lush vineyards, and panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The picturesque scenery creates an idyllic backdrop for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying the winery's offerings.

As one approaches Casanel Vineyard and Winery, they are greeted by rows upon rows of meticulously manicured vines. The vineyards stretch out as far as the eye can see, creating a mesmerizing sight that captures the essence of the region's viticulture.

The vineyard landscape is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the winery's team, who tend to the vines with meticulous care, ensuring the production of premium-quality grapes. The surrounding hills and valleys add an extra layer of charm to the winery's landscape. The undulating terrain creates a sense of depth and dimension, enhancing the visual appeal of the vineyards. Visitors can take leisurely strolls through the vineyards, immersing themselves in the peaceful ambiance of the countryside. The gentle slopes and greenery provide a serene setting for relaxation and reflection.

The pièce de résistance of the Casanel Vineyard and Winery landscape is undoubtedly the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Rising in the distance, these mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the winery's vineyards. Their rugged peaks and ever-changing hues add a touch of grandeur to the already picturesque scenery. Whether bathed in the golden light of sunrise or bathed in the soft hues of sunset, the mountains create a captivating panorama that leaves visitors in awe.

Once we arrived I quickly found the team member that was assigned to us. We were given a brief tour of the tasting area and began with the tasting.

We were then escorted to the lower level and were given a tour of the facility by Cassey the wife of the owner. That lower level opened to an outside seating area where some strolled out to while others went upstairs. For the group of out sitting outside, we were in for a little treat as the owner, Nelson, came out to join us. He regaled us with stories of him time in the Brazilian military switching effortlessly between Portuguese and English.

Nelson, the owner of Casanel, proved to be an exceptional entertainer as he captivated our group for the next twenty minutes on the outer deck. With his charismatic personality and passion for storytelling, he created an unforgettable experience that combined breathtaking views, engaging narratives, and exquisite wine.

As we gathered on the deck, the anticipation in the air was palpable. Nelson took center stage and immediately commanded our attention with his warm smile and confident demeanor. He began by sharing the history of Casanel, a family-owned winery nestled in the heart of Virginia's wine country. His anecdotes were filled with fascinating details about the vineyard's origins, the winemaking process, and the challenges faced by the family throughout the years. It was evident that Nelson's love for his craft extended far beyond the mere production of wine; it was a genuine passion that he was eager to share with others.

The stunning views surrounding us only enhanced the enchanting atmosphere. The deck overlooked endless rows of lush grapevines, gently swaying in the breeze. The golden hues of the setting sun cast a warm glow over the landscape, creating a picturesque backdrop for Nelson's storytelling. As he spoke, we couldn't help but be transported to the very vineyards he described, imagining the labor of love that went into each bottle of Casanel's wine.

To complement the captivating narratives, Nelson treated us to a selection of Casanel's finest wines. Each sip was a delightful symphony of flavors, expertly crafted to showcase the unique characteristics of the grapes grown on the estate. Nelson's expertise in winemaking was evident as he guided us through the tasting, sharing insights into the flavor profiles, the aging process, and the art of food pairing. It was a sensory journey that awakened our palates and deepened our appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each bottle.

The combination of Nelson's storytelling, the breathtaking views, and the exquisite wine created an experience that transcended mere entertainment. It was an immersion into the world of Casanel, a journey that left us with a profound appreciation for the artistry and dedication that goes into producing exceptional wine. Nelson's ability to engage and connect with his audience made the experience all the more memorable, leaving us with a desire to return to Casanel to continue the adventure he had so skillfully begun.
