In the summer of 2009, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure to hike Mt. Kongo (or Kongo-san and the Japanese call it), one of Japan's most picturesque mountains. I embarked on this journey with my Japanese friend who I had mentioned in previous episodes. This journey tested my physical endurance like it had not been tested in many years. Together, we conquered the challenging trails, witnessed breathtaking views, and formed an enduring bond that would last to this day. This episode recounts the thrilling experience of hiking Mt. Kongo with my friend, highlighting the beauty of nature and the power of human connections.

I wanted a close to authentic Japanese experience and wanted to get started early in the morning, so I suggested that stay at a Ryokan just outside of Mt. Kongo grounds. By the way, a Ryokan is a small traditional hotel usually with co-ed hot baths. Our adventure began early in the morning as we set foot on the trailhead of Mt. Kongo. The lush greenery and the tranquil ambiance instantly captivated our senses. My friend, who had climbed Kongo several times, exuded confidence, and enthusiasm, making me feel at ease despite my limited hiking experience. As we started ascending, we engaged in conversations, learning about each other's backgrounds, interests, and shared love for nature.

The trail to the summit of Mt. Kongo presented us with a series of steep inclines, rocky terrains, and dense forests. Each step demanded physical strength and mental resilience. We took short breaks to catch our breath, hydrate, and appreciate the surrounding beauty. The ascending path was demanding, but the breathtaking scenery of the Japanese countryside served as a constant reminder of the reward awaiting us at the summit.

As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed into a mesmerizing panorama. The vibrant colors of wildflowers painted the mountainside, and the symphony of chirping birds provided a soothing soundtrack to our journey. The air was crisp and refreshing, rejuvenating our spirits with every breath. We paused frequently to capture the awe-inspiring vistas with our cameras, knowing that words alone could not do justice to the grandeur of Mt. Kongo.

As we ascended Mt. Kongo, a sense of awe and wonder enveloped me. Amidst the rugged terrain, we unexpectedly encountered an “nenpai no josei” an elderly Japanese woman, her determination etched on her face. My friend and the woman began speaking in Japanese. If anyone have any Japanese speaking friends you know that the inflection in their speech becomes exaggerated when they are surprised. So, this happened to the woman’s speech accompanied by a humungous smile and laughter. This went on for about five minutes before the conversation ended with profuse bowing on the part of my friend and off went the woman.

I asked what did they talk about, what caused the woman’s tone to change, and what made the both of you laugh? My friend said they talked about loving the outdoors, the love of Kongo-san being so close to enjoy on a regular basis, and the woman’s surprise to see a black man on the tail. The woman said that I was so huge. I had to ask for clarification…“she meant huge vertically and not horizontally right?” My friend said both. My smile quickly disappeared…anyway, I was glad that I was able to defy stereotypes and challenging societal norms. In that moment, I realized the power of unity and the beauty of diversity as we embarked on this extraordinary journey together, breaking barriers and forging connections beyond appearances.

Beyond the natural beauty, our hike became an opportunity for cultural exchange. My friend shared fascinating stories about Japanese folklore, traditions, and the significance of mountains in Japanese culture. I, in turn, shared anecdotes about my own culture, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for our respective backgrounds. This exchange of knowledge and experiences enriched our bond, making the hike more than just a physical challenge.

After hours of strenuous hiking, we finally reached the summit of Mt. Kongo. The feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming, and we celebrated our triumph with a sense of pride and joy. Standing at the peak, we marveled at the panoramic view of rolling hills, distant mountains, and the sprawling city below. The sense of serenity and achievement was indescribable, and it united us in a shared sense of awe and gratitude. From atop Mount Kongo, the view was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Stretching as far as the eye could see, a panorama of majestic peaks, lush green valleys, and winding rivers unfolded before me. The serene beauty of nature embraced my senses, leaving me humbled and grateful for the privilege of witnessing such a breathtaking sight.

At the summit of our hike, I eagerly unwrapped the box lunch my Japanese friend had prepared. The sight of neatly arranged sushi rolls, delicate tempura, and vibrant pickled vegetables made my mouth water. Each bite was a harmonious blend of flavors, showcasing the artistry and precision of Japanese cuisine. As we savored the delicious meal amidst breathtaking views, I felt a deep appreciation for the cultural exchange and the bond we shared through this delectable feast.

The journey down the mountain was as important as the ascent. Navigating the steep declination of the trail, I quickly realized that my leg muscles would be put to the test much more than I realized. Each step required an extra push, as I relied on the strength of my thighs and calves to maintain balance and control. The unexpected challenge added to the exhilaration of the hike, reminding me of the power and resilience of my own body. Our conversations shifted from the physical challenges to the lessons learned along the way. We discussed the importance of perseverance, the beauty of embracing new experiences, and the significance of human connections.

In conclusion, hiking Mt. Kongo with my friend in 2009 was an experience that will forever remain etched in my memory. The physical challenges, the breathtaking beauty of nature, and the cultural exchange made this adventure truly exceptional. As we descended from the summit, I realized that this journey was not just about conquering a mountain; it was about discovering the strength within ourselves, forming lasting connections, and appreciating the wonders of the world around us. This unforgettable experience taught me that the greatest adventures are often found in the company of remarkable individuals, and that the memories created during these journeys are as valuable as the destinations themselves.

The following day, my legs betrayed me, feeling as if they were made of rubber. The aftermath of the challenging hike on Mount Kongo had left my muscles fatigued and sore. As I rushed to catch the train at the airport, my attempts to run resembled the unsteady movements of a newborn giraffe, lacking coordination and stability. Each step was a struggle, a reminder of the physical feat I had conquered just a day ago. Nevertheless, I persevered, determined to overcome the temporary weakness and embrace the memories of the remarkable journey I had experienced.
